 82年、ファット・マイク(本名:マイク・バーケット)、エリック・サンディン、エリック・メルヴィンによって自身らのハイスクール時代に結成された。バンド名は"Negative FX"というバンドに因んでつけられており、特に意味はないとメンバーは主張している

ハイスクール時代に組まれたバンドであった為、私生活の事情などによって結成当初はバンドの入れ替えが激しかった。89年に発売したアルバム「Liberal Animation」と「S&M Airlines」によりヒットするものの、当時メンバー内でマリファナが流行し、それに嫌気がさしてスティーヴ・キッドウィラーが脱退しエル・ヘーフェがメンバーとなって以降は今現在までメンバーを変えずに続けている。

メンバーのファット・マイクは独自のレーベルである、「Fat Wreck Chords」を91年に立ち上げている。

「War on Errorism」ではブッシュを皮肉った絵をジャケットに使い、更に「ROCK AGAINST BUSH」という反ブッシュのオムニバスを2枚プロデュース。その為か、CIAからマークされているという噂がある　（Wikipediaより）
